Alexandria — City of Dreams

Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria was the intellectual capital of the ancient world. Today it remains Egypt’s most cosmopolitan city — a Mediterranean soul with a Pharaonic heart.

Where East Meets the Mediterranean

The City Alexander Built to Last

For nearly a thousand years, Alexandria was the most important city in the world. The Great Library of Alexandria — the ancient world’s greatest repository of knowledge — attracted scholars from every civilization. Cleopatra ruled from here. Julius Caesar fell in love here. The apostle Mark founded one of Christianity’s earliest churches here. Alexandria is not just Egypt’s second city — it is one of history’s first.

What to Discover in Alexandria

01
Qaitbay Citadel

Built on the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — this 15th-century fortress guards the harbor as it has for 600 years.

02
The Roman Amphitheatre

The only Roman theatre ever discovered in Egypt, excavated in the 1960s, offering a vivid glimpse into the city’s life under Roman rule and its cosmopolitan classical heritage.

03
Catacombs of Kom el-Shuqafa

The largest Roman-era funerary complex in Egypt — a three-level underground necropolis where Egyptian, Greek, and Roman burial traditions blend in a uniquely Alexandrian way.

04
Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The modern reincarnation of the ancient Great Library — a stunning contemporary monument to learning, hosting millions of books, museums, and cultural events on the Mediterranean shore.

05
The Corniche & Seafront Life

Alexandria’s famous seaside promenade is where the city breathes — coffeehouses, seafood restaurants, and a laid-back Mediterranean pace that is entirely distinct from Cairo.

06
Montaza Palace Gardens

The royal summer palaces of the last Egyptian kings, set within expansive Mediterranean gardens overlooking the sea — a rare glimpse of Egypt’s early 20th-century royal heritage.

Elias Tours Perspective

“Alexandria is the only city in Egypt that makes you feel the weight of the entire ancient world — Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Jewish, and early Christian — all in the same afternoon.”

Questions

Frequently Asked
Questions

Is Alexandria worth a day trip from Cairo?

Yes, if your interest is Greco-Roman history or Mediterranean Egypt. The drive is 2.5 hours each way, giving you 5–6 hours in the city. The main sites — Qaitbay Citadel, Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, and Bibliotheca Alexandrina — can be covered in a full day.

What happened to the ancient Library of Alexandria?

The original library was destroyed in antiquity — the exact cause is debated, with fire, Caesar’s campaign, and later Roman edicts all suggested. The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, opened in 2002, is built near the ancient site as a symbolic successor, not a reconstruction.

What is Qaitbay Citadel?

A 15th-century fortress built by Sultan Qaitbay on the exact site where the Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The citadel incorporates blocks from the lighthouse in its construction.

Is Alexandria different from the rest of Egypt?

Noticeably so. Alexandria has a distinctly Mediterranean character — wide corniche, European-influenced architecture, a strong café culture, and a more relaxed urban pace. The food is different too, with more emphasis on seafood than Cairo.

How do you get from Cairo to Alexandria?

By road (2.5 hours on the desert highway) or by train (2–2.5 hours, several daily departures). For a private guided day trip, a car with a driver is the most flexible option.
