That is why we run this as a private 3-day, 2-night tour. Anything shorter means watching the desert through a car window instead of standing in it.

Why Siwa is worth three days

Siwa is unlike anywhere else in Egypt. It was cut off from the Nile Valley for most of its history, so the town kept its own Berber (Amazigh) language and its own architecture of salt rock and mud called kershef. There are no tour buses here; donkey carts still outnumber taxis. The Egyptian Tourism Authority lists Siwa among Egypt’s top emerging destinations, but it still feels remote because it is.

The sites are spread out, and the best moments aren’t monuments at all: sunset over Fatnas Island, tea on a dune in the Great Sand Sea, a swim in a spring that has been in use for over two thousand years. You can’t rush any of that, and we don’t try.

Your Siwa Oasis Cairo itinerary, day by day

Day 1 – Cairo to Siwa

Your Siwa Oasis Cairo tour starts with pickup from your Cairo hotel at 6:00 am. The route runs through El Alamein and along the coast to Marsa Matrouh, where we stop for lunch, then turns south into the desert. You’ll reach Siwa around 4:00 pm. After check-in at your lodge, we head to Fatnas Island for sunset over the lake with fresh juice from the palm groves, then dinner at a local Siwan restaurant.

Day 2 – Temples, springs, and the Great Sand Sea

This is the full Siwa day. In the morning your Egyptologist takes you to the Oracle Temple of Amun, the Umm Ubayd temple ruins, and the rock tombs of the Mountain of the Dead. Then a swim at Cleopatra Spring and lunch in town. In the afternoon we swap the van for a 4×4 and drive into the Great Sand Sea: dune driving, sandboarding, a dip in the Bir Wahed hot spring, and sunset from the top of the dunes. Dinner back in Siwa.

Day 3 – Salt lakes and the drive back

Start the morning floating in Siwa’s turquoise salt lakes; the water is so dense you can’t sink. Then a walk through Old Shali Fortress and the market for Siwan dates, olive oil, and silver before we begin the drive back around 10:30 am. You’ll be at your Cairo hotel between 7:30 and 8:30 pm.

Best time for a Siwa Oasis Cairo tour

October through April is the comfortable season for a Siwa Oasis Cairo trip, good for walking and the desert safari. March and April add the olive and date harvest. Summer (June to September) is very hot during the day, though the springs and the dry desert evenings make it more bearable than people expect. We run the tour year-round but adjust the daily rhythm in summer: sites early, springs at midday, dunes at sunset.

Can I visit Siwa as a day trip from Cairo?

No, and we’d rather tell you that plainly than sell you one. The drive is 8 to 9 hours each way, so a “day trip” would mean 17+ hours of driving for two hours at the oasis. Three days and two nights is the honest minimum; some guests stay longer.

Yes to both. Cleopatra Spring is a natural pool that has been in use since antiquity, and the salt lakes are dense enough to float in without effort. Bring a swimsuit and a towel; we’ll handle the rest.
