This GEM Saqqara from Alex tour is the premium full-day option for cruise passengers docking at Alexandria Port who want to see the very best of ancient Egypt in a single extraordinary day. Cover three world-class sites: the brand-new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) with Tutankhamun’s complete burial collection, the Giza Pyramids and Great Sphinx, and the Step Pyramid of Saqqara — the world’s first pyramid, built 4,700 years ago by the genius architect Imhotep. Guided throughout by a licensed Egyptologist, with private vehicle, all entrances, and a proper lunch included.
Alexandria Port to Cairo is 225 km — approximately 2.5 hours each way in your private vehicle. We depart the port at 7:00am and plan your return by 7:30pm, leaving at least 90 minutes before your ship sails. For this GEM Saqqara from Alex premium itinerary, we monitor your ship’s departure time live throughout the day.
Opened in 2023 next to the Giza Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum is the world’s largest archaeological museum. The centrepiece of any GEM Saqqara from Alex experience is the complete Tutankhamun collection — over 5,000 burial objects including the legendary gold funerary mask, the golden throne, the ritual beds, and the royal mummy, displayed together for the first time in history. The Great Staircase lined with colossal royal statues is one of the most dramatic interior spaces on earth. Allow 2.5-3 hours.
Adjacent to the GEM, the Giza Plateau is home to the Great Pyramid of Khufu (the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World), the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx. Your Egyptologist explains the construction techniques, religious purpose, and latest discoveries at this site — including the recently discovered ancient harbour, ramp system, and worker villages. The the itinerary positions the Pyramids visit for optimal light and minimal crowds.
Twenty km south of Giza lies Saqqara — the oldest stone structure in the world and the burial ground of Memphis, Egypt’s first capital. The Step Pyramid of Djoser (2667 BC) was designed by Imhotep, history’s first named architect, and preceded the Great Pyramid by 130 years. The complex recently reopened after a 14-year restoration and includes the beautifully restored Funerary Complex, the Heb-Sed Court, and the famous Serdab (a sealed chamber containing a replica of the seated Djoser statue). No visit here is complete without standing in front of the world’s first pyramid.
Departure from port at 7:00am, return by 7:30pm. The tour runs daily. Best season: October through April. This is a long and rewarding day — wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and a hat. Minimum recommended layover: 13 hours.

The standard Alexandria shore excursion runs to the Giza Pyramids and maybe the Egyptian Museum. This Saqqara from Alex premium experience goes further. The Grand Egyptian Museum alone takes most visitors two hours to explore properly — and that is before arriving at the Giza Plateau, where the Great Pyramid, Khafre, Menkaure, and the Sphinx await. Adding Saqqara transforms a great day into an unforgettable one.
Saqqara is where Egyptian civilization learned to build in stone. The Step Pyramid of Djoser, designed by the architect Imhotep around 2650 BC, was the world’s first large-scale stone structure — six mastaba terraces stacked to create history’s earliest pyramid. The recently restored pyramid complex includes Imhotep’s colonnade, the Heb-Sed court, and some of the finest painted tomb chapels in Egypt at the nearby Mastabas of Ti and Kagemni.
This Saqqara from Alex tour is exclusively private. Your licensed Egyptologist guide — holding a formal degree in Egyptology and a national tourist licence — sequences the three sites strategically to minimize travel time and maximize what you see. The Egyptian Tourism Authority identifies Saqqara as one of Egypt’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, part of the broader Memphis necropolis designation. Read more in our Alexandria culture guide and explore all available Egypt Activities, Egypt Tour Packages, or contact us to book.
Approximately 12-13 hours door to door: 2.5 hrs drive each way plus 6-7 hours visiting the three sites with a lunch break.
The Step Pyramid at Saqqara is older and more historically significant than Dahshur’s Bent and Red Pyramids. After the 2023 restoration, Saqqara is also in better condition. We recommend Saqqara as the premium third site for this itinerary.
The drive from Giza to Tahrir adds 45 minutes. On a port day itinerary, we recommend the GEM only — it houses the complete Tutankhamun collection and is adjacent to the Pyramids, saving valuable time.
