Coptic Cairo sits on the southern edge of central Cairo, built over the site of the Roman fortress of Babylon. The quarter has been a Christian community for nearly 2,000 years. It contains some of the oldest functioning churches in the world.
The Hanging Church — officially the Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church — dates to the 3rd century AD and is built suspended over two Roman towers. The nave is made from carved cedar wood and the interior holds 110 icons, the oldest dating to the 8th century.
The Coptic Museum next door holds the world’s largest collection of Coptic Christian art: textiles, manuscripts, icons, and carved stonework spanning 1,600 years. The building itself is worth the visit — opened in 1910, it uses traditional mashrabiya screens and carved ceilings throughout.
The Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the oldest in Egypt, stands within the same compound. It was built in 882 AD on the site where, according to tradition, Moses was found in the bulrushes. The Cairo Geniza documents —
300,000 medieval manuscripts — were discovered here in 1896.
After Coptic Cairo, the tour moves to Khan El Khalili. The bazaar has operated continuously since 1382. It covers several city blocks of covered lanes selling gold, silver, spices, perfumes, textiles, and handmade crafts. El Fishawi coffeehouse inside the bazaar has been open without interruption since 1797 — it is a good place to sit with a coffee and watch the lane for twenty minutes.
Lunch is at a local restaurant near the bazaar. Traditional Egyptian dishes: kushari, grilled meats, mezze. Beverages are not included.

October to April gives the most comfortable walking weather: 14°C to 22°C. The Coptic Museum and churches are partly sheltered, but the walk between sites is outdoors.
May to September: heat reaches 35°C by midday. A 9:00am start gets you through the outdoor portions before the worst heat. Khan El Khalili’s covered lanes stay cooler than the open street.
Friday morning is quieter at Coptic Cairo — many shops in Khan El Khalili close for Friday prayer between 12pm and 2pm. Tours that start at 9am finish the bazaar section comfortably before noon.

Can I combine this with the Pyramids?

Is the tour suitable for limited mobility?
The Coptic Museum has steps. The Hanging Church has a steep staircase. The lanes of Khan El Khalili are uneven cobblestone. Mention mobility needs at booking and the guide adjusts the route.
